Private First Class NEWELL L. EVANS 14060937 POW, U. S. Army. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex M. Fields, Shreveport Louisiana, brother of Private First Class TROY L. EVANS, Private First Class WILLIAM MURRAY EVANS, Private First Class WILLIAM W. FIELDS and T/ Sergeant FORT A. FIELDS. He was born June 25, 1920. He attended Coushatta High School, and was inducted into the armed service September 1, 1941, at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, at the age of 21. As a member of the 81st Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Fort Knox, Kentucky, he went from Fort Dix, New Jersey, to Northern Ireland and England (ETO) for further training and staging. He took part in the North African fighting. From North Africa he took part in the invasion of Sicily and was a prisoner of war for 27 months in Sicily, Italy, Austria and Germany, having been captured February 17, 1943, and liberated April 15, 1945. This soldier was at Stalag IIIB in Furstenberg, Stalag IIB in Hammerstein, and Stalag I at Spremberger. He was honorably discharged October 4, 1945, at Camp Lee, Virginia.
