Sergeant Robert “Bob” F. Wegman 20219187 US Army KIA . He was born on March 28, 1920, in New York, he was the son of Frank Joseph Wegman and Estella Regina Derleth Wegman. He had two brothers. Bob graduated from Aquinas Institute in Rochester New York.
He entered the National Guard on Feb. 20 1939 and served in Company A, 102nd Medical Regiment. He entered the US Army on October 15, 1940 in Rochester New York when his National Guard unit was called into full time active service. At that time he was working as a Stock Clerk.
On October 23, 1943 he was transferred to 3rd BN HQ, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division at Camp Van Dorn Mississippi from the 20th CO 4th BN 1st STR at Fort Benning Georgia. September 7 1944 he transferred into C Company, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. On October 7th he transferred into D Company, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division.
On March 19th or 20th, 1945 in the vicinity of Ensheim Germany, the 1st round of an enemy artillery barrage mortally wounded Sergeant Robert F Wegman he was the jeep driver for 1st Lieutenant Dwight “Rocky” Raymond Crandell and 3rd platoon. Lt. Crandell with no regard for his personal safety went out into the enemy fire and carried Sergeant Wegman to cover for first aid and evacuation. Sergeant Wegman died on March 19, or 20th 1945, in Germany at the age of 24, and was buried in Gates, New York. Sergeant Robert F Wegman was the 1st of 5 men to be Killed in Action in World War Two from D Company, 253rd Infantry Regiment. All 5 men died between March 19, and April 8 1945.
