WILLIAM WOODROW SPORTER 2745095 United States Navy. He is the husband of Lucille Dorothy Sporter, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Sporter of Georgetown. He was born August 1, 1919, and attended Georgetown Junior High School and Selma High School. Entering the United States Navy on September 13, 1940, at the age of 21. He was sent to the U. S. Naval Training Station, San Diego, California, next to the Destroyer Base, San Diego, then to Naval Training School, Navy Yard, Washington, D. C., and Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia. He was assigned to duty on the USS Meredith DD 890 when it was commissioned and embarked November 19, 1940, with the USS Tracy DM 19, for the Pacific Area. He served in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, and the occupation of Bougainville. He has the American Theater of Operations and the Asiatic Pacific Theater (PTO) Ribbon with two campaign stars, and was commended at Captain’s Meritorious Mast for action above and beyond the call of duty handling depth charges cast loose on the fantail during a hurricane. He is also the brother of Technician fourth grade JAMES ALBERT SPORTER, and PHILIP SPORTER, JR.
