Captain Robert Hayes Meade O-423346 was born on December 3, 1918, in Washington, Indiana. He was the son of Edward Elmer Meade and Charlotte Lottie Potts Meade. He entered the US Army on August 16, 1941 at the age of 22. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 8 inches tall weighed 148 pounds he had blue eyes and brown hair. He was working for William H Block Company at the time oh his enlistment. He entered Headquarters Company, 253rd Infantry regiment, 63rd Infantry Division on September 4, 1944 at Camp Van Dorn Mississippi. He transferred to I Company 253rd Infantry regiment, 63rd Infantry Division on October 19, 1944, he served in Combat in Company I. He earned the Bronze star medal for meritorious service from 14 February - 19 February 1945 in Sarreguemines France. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross on April 8, 1945, near Zuttlingen, Germany. When his company was unable to enter the town because of heavy enemy machine gun activity, Captain Meade, armed with an M-1 rifle, moved out alone toward the objective. His daring attack resulted in the capture of fourteen SS men and completely unnerved the strongly entrenched enemy. Advancing through the town under sniper fire, he located the mayor and then forced more than one hundred hostile civilians to cease resistance. Captain Meade's courageous action achieved, single-handedly, the surrender of the town. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Stare Medal with Oak leaf cluster, American Defense Medal, The American Theater of operations Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater of operations Medal with  two battle stars the World War Two Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was discharged from the US Army on May 16, 1947. He  married Marie Blanche Donnelly, and they had three children. He died on April 9, 1987, in New Port Richey, Florida, at the age of 68.
