1st Lt. Martin Clifford Mathis, 0-926238 US Army. He was born January 26, 1924, the son of C. W. and Geneva Mathis, of Houston, Texas, attended Texas A & M, and volunteered December 15, 1942, for the Army Infantry. He received his commission to 2nd Lt. October 3, 1944. He trained at Camp Van Dorn, Miss, and served in and he lead 3rd Platoon, Company L, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division, receiving wounds in combat February 18, 1945. A few days earlier he had been commended for leading and capturing with outstanding leadership and ability, a German garrison in a daylight raid. He returned to L Company. Lt. Mathis served overseas from November, 1944, to May, 1945, in the European Theater where he participated in combat in the Saar Basin and Rhineland Campaign, He was discharged May 16, 1946. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, The American Theater of operations, the European Theater of Operations Medal ETO with 2 battle star, the World War Two Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal.
