Private First Class Norman Keith Katz 37731909 US Army. He was born on November 8, 1925, in Climax, Kansas and grew up in Coyville, Kansas, the son of Elmer William Katz Sylvia Larcom. He entered the US Army on January 26, 1944, at the age of 18. At the time of his enlistment, he was 5 foot 11 inches tall weighed 150 pounds had brown hair and hazel eyes. On July 20, 1944 he was transferred to, Company E, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division at Camp Van Dorn Mississippi. He went overseas with Company E in November 1944. He was wounded in action by shrapnel on Feb 4, 1945. On 8 April 1945, [then Private] Norman K. Katz in the vicinity of Stein, Germany. When the sergeant of the machine gun section was killed, Private First Class Katz immediately took command of the section, led them to a better position, and directed their fire on the enemy. Through his quick thinking and action, fifty of the enemy were killed or wounded. Later, when one gunner was killed and the assistant gunner was wounded, he picked up the gun and, firing as he advanced, killed or wounded nine more of the enemy. The gallant action and outstanding leadership displayed by Private First Class Katz reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal (SSM), Bronze Star Medals (BSM), the Purple Heart Medal (PHM), The Combat Infantry Badge, the American Theater of Operations Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater of operations Medal, the World War Two Victory Medal. After the war he was discharged from the US Army on March 29, 1946. He reenlisted in the Army on Jan 8, 1947 and was discharged again on December 21, 1949. He married Merwinn Mae “Mickey” McKnight Katz On August 15, 1958. They had 4 children three sons and one daughter. He died on November 5, 1994, at the age of 68, and was buried in Eureka, Kansas.
