Sergeant Clarence “Clare” Benbow Gerity 16112520 US Army. He was born on November 15, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Thomas Clarence Gerity and Bertha Irene Benbow Gerity he was Presbyterian. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan. He enlisted in the US army on October 13, 1942, in Detroit Michigan, at the age of 20. At the time of his enlistment, he was 5 foot 7 inches and a half tall, he weighed 156 pounds had brown hair and brown eyes and he had Operation Scar on his back.
On April 21, 1944 he entered the 63rd Division at Camp Van Dorn Mississippi from the Army Air Corps on this day he was assigned to K Company on that same day he left K Company for L Company. After serving almost a month in L company he left it for E Company on May 17, 1944. He was assigned to 4th platoon mortar squad, Company E, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. He went overseas with the company in November 1944 and entered combat in December. The week of April 2 – 9, 1945 his company would have its hardest fighting of the war. On 8 April 1945, Sergeant Clarence Gerity was serving with Company E, 253rd Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division . Noting the disorganization in the rifle platoons due to the loss of their leaders, Sergeant Gerity voluntarily turned his mortar squad over to his assistant and went forward to take charge. He succeeded in organizing a small group of the company and reduced the enemy resistance. This prompt action and leadership enabled them to take their objective without further loss. A week later on April 15, 1945 he earned the Bronze Star Medal at Michelbach Germany when his unit was held up by 3 enemy machine guns Sergeant Gerity exposed himself to the enemy fire and gave the necessary Orders for his unit to withdraw. He stayed in his exposed position to cover with fire this action saved his platoon from suffering casualties..
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal (SSM), Bronze Star Medals (BSM), the Purple Heart Medal (PHM), The Combat Infantry Badge, the American Theater of Operations Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater of operations Medal, and the World War Two Victory Medal. After the war Clarence married Delphine May Pavey Gerity on June 6, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. They had two children during their marriage. Clare retired from AT&T. Clarence died on February 6, 2013, in Powell, Ohio, at the age of 91.
