PFC Herman Kenneth Phillips 35848631 KIA US Army. He was born on November 16, 1925, in Upshur, West Virginia, he was the son of Herman Truman Phillips Mary Ethel Crites Phillips, of Post Rt. 1 Buckhannon West Virginia. He had six siblings, and he was a Protestant. He attended Upshue County High School. He entered the US Army on January 26, 1944 at Clarksburg West Virginia, at the age of 18. At the time of his enlistment he was 6 foot 3 inches tall weighed 157 pounds had brown eyes and brown hair. He trained at Camp Blanding Florida. He entered M Company, 255th Infantry regiment, 63rd Infantry Division on July 10, 1944. He served in M Company at Camp Van Dorn and in Europe. He served in England, France Belgium and Germany. He was Killed in action on April 8, 1945 in Widdern Germany this town is about 8.5 miles north west of where John Crews earned the Medal of Honor on the same day. April 8th was the 2nd most-deadliest day for the 63rd Division in World War Two. He died at the age of 19 years 4 months 22 days. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medalthe Purple Heart Medalthe Good Conduct MedalThe American Theater of operationsthe European Theater of Operations Medal ETO with 2 battle star, the World War Two Victory Medal. His body was returned to the United States in 1949 and buried at Big Bend Cemetery in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
