Master Sergeant JAMES BAKER SMITH

 

Master Sergeant JAMES BAKER SMITH, US Army Air Forces. Brother of Private First Class ALBERT LISTER SMITH. Husband of Thelma Elaine Smith of 2702 Penick St., Shreveport, Louisiana, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith, Rt. 2, Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born February 22, 1922, and attended Greenwood High School, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, and Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, Ruston. He entered the Army Air Forces August 31, 1942, at the age of 20. He was assigned to Camp Luna, Las Vegas, New Mexico. He also served at Romulus Army Air Field, Romulus, Michigan; Hector Field, Fargo, North Dakota, and Gore Field, Great Falls, Montana. On May 17, 1945, he embarked for Manila in the Philippine Islands and served in Manila, in Finschhafen, New Guinea, and in Yokohama, Japan. He was in combat in the Battle for Luzon, and has the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze Campaign Star, the American Theater of Operations Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged February 8, 1946, at Fort Lewis, Washington.
