Lt. Colonel George J. Mitchell Jr. 0-461738
Lt. Colonel George J. Mitchell Jr. O-461738 US Army. He was born on October 3, 1918, in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, he was the son of George Julian Mitchell Sr and Annie Laurie Griffin. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a 1938 graduate of old Central High School and a 1942 graduate of The Citadel.
He entered G Company, 253rd Infantry regiment, 63rd Infantry Division on August 10, 1944 from TIS. He served with G Company, at both Camp Van Dorn Mississippi and in combat in Europe. He entered HQ Company, 254th Infantry regiment, 63rd Infantry Division, on May 21, 1945. He left HQ company for F Company 254th Infantry regiment 63rd Infantry Division on May 27, 1945. He left F Company August 20, 1945 for the 55th Ord GP at this time he was a 1st Lt.
After the war he stayed in the US Army he married Alice Margaret Connolly of San Diego on May 27, 1950, in Nürnberg, Germany. They ended up having 2 sons, James Mitchell, and Arthur Mitchell. He retired from the Army in 1963 as a Lieutenant Colonel and he was awarded Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the French Croix de Guerre. In 1969 in San Diego, he opened Centurion Films which specialized in military training films for 18 years. He was an associate member of American Society of Cinematographers and wrote for its publications. He died on March 26, 1994 in La Mesa, Calif. at the age of 75.
