Technical Sergeant Walter Jackson Harris 39676072 US Army KIA. He was born on February 2, 1915, the son of William Yewell Harris and Louisa Mae (Grimes) Harris of Missouri. He enlisted at the age of 26, on February 26, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Walter was living in White Pine County, Nevada. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 11 inches tall weighed 160 pounds had gray eyes and brown hair. Sergeant Harris was awarded the Silver Star on 15 August 1944. During the first day of Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France. The 3rd Division landed at Saint Raphael just east of the main landing beaches at Frejus. He served in Company I, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On 9 October 1944, he was serving under the command of Lt. Victor Kandle, when Kandle earned the Medal of honor. On October 24, 1944 Sergeant Walter J. Harris was wounded for the 3rd time and he died that day of his wounds, at the age of 29. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Silver Star Medal, 3 Purple Heart Medal, The American Theater of operations, the European Theater of Operations Medal ETO, American Defense Medal, and the World War Two Victory Medal.
