T/ Sgt. CLARENCE PETERS, JR. 38172956 United States Army Died in the service of his country in the Campaign of Normandy, France, after going into combat about June 11, 1944, and fighting his way in through Cherbourg. He was the husband of Dorothy A. Peters of Greenwood and the father of Clarence Peters III. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Peters of Greenwood, He is also the brother of Tec/ Sergeant, WILLIAM M. PETERS. He was born April 27, 1920, and attended Mooringsport and Greenwood High Schools, graduating at Greenwood. He was a baseball player in East Texas and the Cotton States Leagues and was employed by Gulf Shipbuilding Company at the time of entering the service June 2, 1942, at Camp Livingston, at the age of 22. He trained with the Infantry at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and Camp Blanding, Florida, and took part in the Tennessee and Arizona Maneuvers before going overseas in March, 1944, to the European Theater (ETO). From England, he took part in the assault invasion of Normandy as a platoon sergeant and fought in the battle for the great port city of Cherbourg. He was wounded in action against the enemy on July 7, 1944, and died next day, July 8. He served in the 313th Infantry Regiment 79th Infantry Division. The Purple Heart Medal (PHM) for the wounds which cost his life was posthumously awarded and was forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Dorothy A. Peters, on January 23, 1946.
