First Lieutenant JAMES SINGLETON SWANN, JR

First Lieutenant JAMES SINGLETON SWANN, JR., Air Forces. Husband of Gloria Boone Swann, of 235 Kings Highway, Shreveport Louisiana, and son of Mr. and Mrs. James Singleton Swann. He was born August 10, 1921, and attended Byrd High School, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, Ruston, and Norton’s Business College. He was direct circulation manager for The Shreveport Times prior to entering the Army Air Forces June 27, 1942, at the age of 21, in Barksdale Field. He went to Santa Ana Amy Air Base, California, for bombardier pre-flight and trained at Victorville, California, Salt Lake City, Utah, Moses Lake, Washington (heavy bombardment) , Spokane, Washington (air gunnery) , and Harvard, Nebraska, where he joined the 447th Heavy Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force,  under Colorado Hunter Harris, Jr., for overseas staging at Kearney, Nebraska With the 447th Heavy Bombardment Group, 709th Bombardment Squadron (H) , he served with the Third Bombardment Division, Fourth Combat Wing, Eighth Air Force, in England as flight bombardier and squadron gunnery officer in the Air Offensive over Europe (ETO). He has the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Campaign Star. Lieutenant Swann also served in the States at Avon Park, Florida, Biloxi, Mississippi, Midland AAF, Texas, San Antonio Air Cadet Center, and Goodfellow Field, San Angelo, Texas. He was honorably discharged September 16, 1945.
