T/ Sgt. Herschel J. Logan 38599517

T/ Sgt. Herschel J. Logan 38599517 US Army. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Logan. He was born on September 10, 1925, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He attended St. John’s Elementary School and Hot Springs High School. He entered the Army December 6, 1943, he received basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida, and Camp Van Dorn. He attended Basic Service School, qualifying as Platoon Sergeant and receiving Sharpshooter’s Medal. He served in 3rd Platoon G Company253rd Infantry Regiment63rd Infantry Division. Sgt. Logan departed November 25, 1944, for Marseilles, France, and during his one year and four months overseas participated in Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He earned the Silver Star Medal on February 8, 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. When the company, having launched an attack, had succeeded in entering an enemy-held woods when Sergeant Logan observed an enemy machine gun section moving to the rear of his platoon. He, alone, left cover and boldly approached the enemy, using assault fire and bayonet. His action killed the leader and forced five of the enemy to surrender. He was wounded in action in the vicinity of Untergriesheim Germany on April 5, 1945, After Victory in Europe day he spent eight months with the Army of Occupation. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badgethe Silver Star Medalthe Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, The American Theater of operationsthe European Theater of Operations Medal ETO with 2 battle star, and the World War Two Victory Medal. After being honorably discharged on April 1, 1946, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, he returned to Hot Springs.
