Warrant Officers Malcolm Arthur Vordenbaum 470345 US Navy. He was born on August 2, 1915, in San Antonio, Texas. The son of Max A Vordenbaum and Lydia M Vordenbaum of 430 Grant Street Wichita Falls, Texas. The family moved to Wichita Falls in 1918 when Max was the supervisor of the building of the initial seven buildings of the State Hospital. Malcolm graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1932. He enrolled as a mechanical engineering student at Texas A&M. In 1936 he joined the firm of J. E. Morgan & Sons, a large building construction company. He married Ferne Vernoye Tracy of La Veda Colorado, on March 1, 1941 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was still worked at J E Morgan and Sons, when he entered the US Navy Seabees with his brother in 1942 around the age 27. At the time of his enlistment he was 6-foot 1 inch tall had blue eyes, blonde hair and weighed 200 pounds. He trained in Norfolk VA with the Seabees. In 1943 Vordenbaum was an extra on the 1944 movie “The Fighting Seabees” starring John Wayne and Susan Hayward. Malcolm Vordenbaum was very proud of this and was especially proud that he had a cameo appearance in the movie. At the end of the film after John Wayne has been killed, Malcolm Vordenbaum can be seen on a ridge shooting down at the enemy.  Malcolm Vordenbaum had taped TEXAS on his back and moved right and left. Also Vordenbaum had the honor of being chosen to crown Susan Hayward, as “Queen of the Seabees.” On the day of the photo shoot he spent a day at Smiley Barnett's ranch making publicity photos with Susan Hayward. After this he was deployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations with a Seabees Unit and served in the Marshalls and Gilberts. He was awarded the  The American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (PTO), The Good Conduct Medal, and the World War Two Victory Medal. In 1957 he returned to Wichita Falls in and joined his father and brother in M.A. Vordenbaum & Sons Construction Co. Malcolm also served for over 50 years as a Mason and was active in the Maskat Shrine. He served as President of the West Texas Chapter of the Associated General Contractors. He was very well known for his track work as a model railroader. He died on December 16, 2004, in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 89.
