First Lieutenant WESLEY RHODES VAWTER, JR.

First Lieutenant WESLEY RHODES VAWTER, JR. 18138169, Army Air Corps. He is the husband of Frances Luckett Vawter, he was born January 9, 1924, and attended Alexander Grammar School, Jackson, Tennessee, Bolton High School, Alexandria, and Louisiana State University LSU, Baton Rouge. Entering the Army Air Forces December 15, 1942, at the age of 18. He received his flight training at Bakersfield, California, Tucson, Arizona, and Pecos, Texas, and was assigned to the AAF pilot pool at Hammer Field, California. He received his wings and commission at Pecos Army Air Field, Texas, and was assigned to the Officers Training Unit at Pueblo Army Air Base, Colorado. On July 20, 1944, Lieutenant Vawter embarked for the European Theater (ETO) and was assigned to the 466th Bombardment Group eight air force at Attlebridge, England, as pilot of B-24 aircraft. He was in combat in the Campaign of Northern France, the Campaign of Germany, and the Ardennes (the Battle of the Bulge). He has the European Theater of Operations Ribbon with three bronze campaign stars and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.
