Metalsmith, 3rd Class ROBERT EARL SMITH

Metalsmith, 3rd Class ROBERT EARL SMITH, US Navy. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Elmer Smith, of 208 East 68th St., Shreveport Louisiana. He was born October 21, 1923, and attended Stonewall and Jonesboro High School and Shreveport Louisiana Trades School. He was a welder prior to entering the United States Navy September 1, 1943, in Shreveport Louisiana at the age of 19. From San Diego Naval Training Station, California, he went to Pearl Harbor December 13, 1943, and there received fire control training. He served with the destroyer USS Fanning 385 in the Marshall Islands, Java, Saipan, the China Sea, the Coral and Tasmanian Seas, the Aleutians, New Caledonia, Iwo Jima, Marcus Island, the Philippines, Ulithi Atoll, and Ceylon (PTO) fought in the Indian Ocean, Marcus Island, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Philippines, and has the American Theater and the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) Ribbon with three stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. He was honorably discharged January 26, 1946.
