2nd Lt. Gilbert Roland O-573158 AKA Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso, Army Air Corps. He was born on December 11, 1905 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico Roland and his family fled Mexico to Texas. He lived in Texas until he was 14 when he hopped on a freight train and went to Hollywood. After arriving there, he found menial jobs and slept in a Catholic church. He often lost those jobs because he spent time working as an extra in films. He chose his screen name by combining the names of his favorite actors, John Gilbert and Ruth Roland.
He served in SQUADRON IV FLIGHT 16 of HEADQUARTERS AIR INTELLIGENCE SCHOOL Army Air Forces Technical Training Command Harrisburg, Pennsylvania EIGHTH COMBAT INTELLIGENCE COURSE (Second Phase). By the time he entered the US Army Air Force he had allready acted in 45 things. After the war he would return to Hollywood and was nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award, for his roles in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). For his contributions to the motion picture industry, Gilbert Roland has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died on May 15, 1994 at the age of 88 in Beverly Hills, California.
