Seaman, First Class Spencer F. Rice, Jr.
Seaman, First Class Spencer F. Rice, Jr. US Navy. Born 26 December 1924 in Morrison, Colorado Attended Valverde, Byers Jr. High and South High School in Denver, and was a railroad terminal employee prior to entering service on 12 January 1944, at the age of 19. Trained at Farragut, Idaho, and served in the Pacific Area aboard the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (BB-57). Seaman Rice fought in battles from Saipan to Japan, and was present during the surrender ceremonies in Tokyo Bay. Honorably discharged on 26 April 1946, he holds the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific (PTO) Ribbon with 8 Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Stars, Good Conduct Medal, World War Two Victory Medal, and Japan Occupation Ribbon. He is the son of Spencer Floyd Rice, Sr., of Denver, and the late Mrs. Bessie Rice.
