PhM 3/ c CHARLES V. PORRAS, JR. 5537589 KIA US Navy Corpsman Navy Cross. He was born Feb. 8, 1924, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Porras, Sr., R. R. l, Box 130, El Paso, attended Texas College of Mines, El Paso; volunteered Nov. 12, 1942, assigned to Navy Med. Corps, Marine Hdqtrs. Co., 3rd Btn., 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division ; trained at San Diego, Calif. Served overseas 1 year, in New Caledonia, New Guinea, New Georgia, Cape Gloucester, New Britain, Peleliu. Awards: (posthumous) Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Certificate of Merit. Excerpt: “Porras unhesitatingly proceeded far ahead of his own lines to go to the aid of helpless comrades. Courageously advancing alone under a withering barrage from Japanese machine guns, succeeded in treating and carrying back 4 wounded men, unaided, before being struck down by a fierce burst of enemy fire; his unwavering devotion and valor were exemplary.” He was Killed in action on September 22, 1944 at the age of 20. He was awarded the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, World War Two Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal.
