Private Joseph Ray Peters, Jr 33432373. US Army KIA. He was born on November 22, 1923 the son of Joseph and Mary Peters of road 1 Brownsville Pennsylvania. He took part in the ASTP at Lake Forest College. He entered the US army on March 16, 1943 at the age of 19. Pvt. Peters served in Company A, 383rd Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division. On October 21, 1944 he disregarded grazing fire to give first aid to a wounded artillery officer. On the second day of the Leyte campaign he was mortally wounded by rifle fire from a Japanese sniper. He was Killed in Action on Catmon Hill, on Leyte , at the age of 20. He was awarded the American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War Two Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with BRONZE BATTLE STAR, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, with BRONZE BATTLE STAR and BRONZE ARROWHEAD, PURPLE HEART MEDAL (PHM), BRONZE STAR MEDAL (BSM).
