 Staff Sergeant James Elmo Melton, Jr. 6282866, US Army Air Corps KIA. He was born October 25, 1920, in McCrory, Arkansas. He is the husband of Reva Mae Melton, of Route 2, St. Anthony, Idaho. His mother, is Mrs. Ella Melton Williams, resides in Tyler, Texas. Staff Sergeant Melton enlisted into the military service December 9, 1937, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 17. He received training in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Utah, Washington, South Dakota, California, Wyoming and Kansas. He left the United States for overseas service May 20, 1943, and arrived in North Africa, May 29, 1943. On November 27, 1943, He was Killed in Action in Italy while serving as an aerial gunner with the 414th Bombardment Squadron, 97th Bombardment Group, he was 22 at the time of his death. He participated in raids over Austria, Greece, Germany, France, Sicily and Italy, and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal (PHM), Air Medal with 6 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and Citation of Honor from the U.S. Army Air Force, a Grateful Memory, from President Roosevelt. He is survived by his mother, wife and father, James E. Melton, Sr. of, Blue Rapids, Kansas.
