He entered the US Army on September 2, 1942, at the age of 27. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 10 inches tall weighed 145 pounds had blue eyes and brown hair. He served in combat with Company E, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was killed in Action in Italy on January 23, 1944, at the age of 28, and was buried in Stony Point, North Carolina. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal; and the Purple Heart medal.
