Staff Sergeant Charles Franklin, 20824296, US Army KIA. He was born September 22, 1920, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Franklin of Durant, Oklahoma. He attended Durant High School and Southeastern State College. He entered the service at Durant, on September 16, 1940, and received his service training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Camp Barkeley, Texas, Fort Devens, Massachusetts, Pine Camp, New York, and Camp Pickett, Virginia. Sergeant Franklin served overseas in the European Theater of War  (ETO) with the 45th Infantry Division, Signal Company. He participated in the battle of Sicily. He was killed in action August 7, 1943, at the age of 22. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal (PHM), Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation.
