S/Sgt. Lowell Wade “Toss” Coffey 38133311

Staff Sergeant Lowell Wade “Toss” Coffey 38133311 US Army. Coffey was born on November 21, 1918, in Zephyr, Texas, the son of Zacharias ‘Zachary’ Brooks Coffey and Katie Marie Graves Coffey. He had one brother and five sisters. He earned the nickname Toss when he was a very small boy he would be seen riding his big white horse and the men of town would ask his name and he would say ” I am the ‘Tossey Boy” therefore he got the nick name “Toss” While in high school he set a state record for the 100 yard dash in track. He served in the US Army in WW2 he enlisted in the US Army on June 9, 1942 in Abilene Texas at the age of 23. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 6 inches tall weighed 157 pound had blonde hair and Blue Eyes and a scar on his head. He served in the Pacific, in October 1944 he was hospitalized for Strain, sacro-iliac. He was awarded The American Campaign Medalthe Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (PTO)The Good Conduct Medal, and the World War Two Victory Medal. 

He was discharged from the US Army on Jan. 24, 1946 after 3 year 7 months and 15 days of service. After returning from WW2 Toss was a cowboy for the rest of his life. He worked and managed a number of large ranches in Brown County. He worked at Brownwood Cattle Auction for 40 years. In addition he was a substitute rural Mail Carrier for 23 years. Toss was also for 50 years was the announcer at youth rodeos in his area. Before his passing toss received a plaque from the Elm Grove Rodeo association for 50 years of service. Another one of Toss past times was refereeing area high school baseball games. He was a member of the Zephyr methodist church. He died on September 6, 2002, in Zephyr, Texas at the age of 83, and was buried there.
