Private First Class Albert William Bernert 16172313 US Army KIA. He was born on August 6, 1924, He was the son of Albert M Bernert, and Madeleine Anne Kappel Bernert and the brother of Anne Madeleine Bernert Pionke, of Chicago Illinois. He attended Lake Forest College and would have been in the Class of 1947. He enlisted on December 14, 1942 at the age of 18. He served in the 4th Platoon Company G, 382nd Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division. He was wounded in action on Leyte on November 4, 1944, and died of his wounds on November 5, 1944, at the age of 20. He was awarded the Sharpshooter Medal (Carbine and 60 MM. Mortar), the Purple Heart Medal (PHM), The Bronze Star Medal (BSM), The Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), The American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (PTO), The Good Conduct Medal, the World War Two Victory Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. His body was returned to the United States in 1948 and he was buried in River Grove, Illinois.
