Lieutenant (jg) ZACK H. BENNETT, JR.

 

Lieutenant (jg) ZACK H. BENNETT, JR., US Navy R. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Zack H. Bennett, 142 Albany Street, Shreveport. Brother of Private First Class BILLY JACK BENNETT KIA. He was born June 10, 1918, and is a graduate of Byrd High School and Centenary College. He was a clerk in the accounting department of Interstate Electric Company until he was sworn into the United States Navy (Amphibious Force) and entered active duty August 2, 1943. From USNR Midshipmen’s School, New York City (Officer Training School) , he embarked for England March 1, 1944, and operated out of the British Isles for 15 months. Lieutenant Bennett served with LST 54 and LST 344, carrying troops and equipment into France, with one trip to Ostend, Belgium, from Southampton, Portland, Plymouth, and Falmouth, England, landing on the Invasion Beaches at LeHavre and Rouen, off St. Michel, and Ostend. He was in the initial assault on Omaha Beach, Normandy, on June 6, 1944, and served through the build-up and support and the evacuation of casualties from France to England. He has the American Theater and European Theater (ETO)  Ribbons, the latter with one battle star for Normandy, and was continuing to serve after 23 continuous months of sea duty.
