Alter James 1st LT. 15th Air force 780th Bomb Sqd. ETO ALTER, JAMES M. '47 In the Army February 26, 1943 to November 4, 194'i 1st Lt.- Bombardier-780th Bomb Sqd., 15th Air Force. "Entered service as private. Assigned cadet and classified pilot. Washed out of pilot school and classified bombardier. Received gunner's and bombardier's D.R., navig.ator wings, and commission April 1944. Received promotion to First Lt. in April of 1945'. Assigned to B-24 ( Liberator) crew t,ained, and embarked for Italy 1n September 1944 by boat. Flew 31 sorties over enemy territory. Had four to go when war ended. Accum-ulated 230 combat ho-urs and 5'5'0 total hours. Half my missions were flown as navig,ator and half· as bombardier. 'Ten months overseas. "R eceived air medal and clusters for missions flown. Five battle stars for area covered. "Missions flown were mostly strategic bombing of oil refineries, war plants, and rai lroad y.ar ds. Also flew tactical mis 40

'Targets included Vienna, Munich, Linz, Bologna, R egensburg, Brenner Pass and others in Germany, Austria, Jugos lavia, Hungary, Italy, Greece, and Poland. "R eturned by air to States stopping in Africa, Azores, and Newfoundland. Given leave and assigned to Bombardie1 instructor school. Discharged." Marksman Medal .45 cal. Pistol, and Carbine, Good Condut Medal, Aerial Gunner's Wings, Bombardiers Wings, Distinguished Unit Citation, EAME Theater Medal with 5 BRONZE BATTLE STARS (Central Europe, Germany, Balkans, Appennines, Po Valley) , AIR MEDAL with 2 OAK LEAF CLUSTERS, A Theater Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
