Alleman Douglas US Army 78th Infantry Division ETO ALLEMAN, DOUGLAS A. '47 In Army December 11 , 1942 to January 26, 1946 PFC- Surgical T echnician-78th Inf. Div. "I believe it was a privilege that while in service with the l,nited States Army, I was .able to experience service with the Army Ground Forces, Army Air Forces and the Army Service Forces. "In the beginning I was trained for Infantry tact ·cs at Lt. McClellans Replacement Camp. Upon completion of basic training, I was sent to Army Specialized 'Training Schools including the University of Alabama ,and Washington and Jefferson University in Pennsy lvania. Engineering courses were all that could be made available to me, engineering i~ 1',ot one of my favored interests so at the end of my first term I applied for transfer to Army Air Corps cadets and u:as accepted. '"Tlie entire group of volunteers, including myself were shipped to Keesler Field, Mississippi to wait for further assignment. At the end of three weeks time I was sent to the U nivers1ty of Buff a lo where I remained for six months in training. '''The Army, at the end of my six months, was seeing less 1'.eed for pilots and an increasing need for men in the ground forces. Not having advanced beyond college training and having come from Ground and Service Forces, I was one of the group chosen to go . "I was sent to Camp Pickett, Virgini.a where I joined the 7 8th Inf an try Division, and was assigned to the 3rd Medical Battalion and remained with them thro-ugho-ut the war. T!ie Division soon left for combat and the European 'Theater. "We landed in Southhampton, England, were billetted in the Bournemouth ,area for three weeks and then crossed the Channel. Our first stop in France was Rauen, then 'Tongren, Belgium and on December 11th of 1944 we moved into Germany in the Aachen sector. We were "on line" three da ys later and didn't "come off" until the end of the war. "I retu-rned to the U.S . with the 84th Division in Januar;, of 1946, was discharged from Camp Grant, Ill. the same month." Good Conduct Medal, A Theater Medal, WW II Victory Medal, EAME Theater Medal with 3 BRONZE BATTLE STARS (Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe) , COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE.
