Staff Sergeant Russell L. Abel, 6935842

Staff Sergeant Russell L. Abel, 6935842 US Army KIA. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Abel, of Unionville, Mo., Russell was born on September 16, 1920, and after finishing the Eighth Grade in school enlisted in the Regular Army on November 1, 1939 at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa. He was sent from there to the Presidio at San Francisco, California where he took his training, and soon became a Sergeant. For sometime he was a guard on Treasure Island California. From there he went to Camp Roberts, California and trained boys for almost 2 years. He spent over two years at Camp Roberts, California, and was in several other training camps before being sent overseas. In December, 1941 soon after the war broke out he was sent to Little Rock, Arkansas to train. While stationed at Little Rock, Arkansas he met and married a young lady whose home was in nearby Rosedale. They were married on July 4, 1942, and had no children were born to this union. He left there in January of 1944 and went to Salina, Kansas where he stayed until he was shipped to Trenton, New Jersey for embarkment. He left New Jersey June 16, 1944 for overseas duty. He served as a member of Company C., 318th. Infantry regiment,  80th Infantry Division. He was killed in action in France on September 20, 1944, in the Vicinity of Loisy, near the Moselle River, approximately half way between Metz and Nancy France, during the Rhineland Campaign. Besides his parents and his wife he leaves three brothers Wayne, Ova and Don; and four sisters Oleva Joslin, Hope, Dorothy Campbell and Mrs. Della Hesterburg.
