Carpenter’s Mate, Third Class CM3C (T) (CB) Gerald “Jerry” Michael Maurice Crotty 8077361. He was born on March 20, 1925, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Robert Joseph Crotty and Mary E Hallesy (Hallissey) Crotty. He was in the class of 1943 from Hartford Public High School. Before entering the US Navy he was working at Pierce Drug Store.
He entered the US Navy on July 6, 1943, at the age of 18. At the time of his enlistment he was 5 foot 11 inches tall weighed 170 pounds had brown hair and brown eyes He served in the 115th Naval Construction Battalion Seabees in the Pacific.
When he came home from the war he worked in one of Hartford’s “infamous factories” and then went to Providence College. After graduation he was a resident of Bloomfield for 60 years and during that time was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. There he served as a Eucharist Minister, Lector, Altar Server, and as a Charter Member of the Parish Council, serving one term as President. He was part of the original group commissioned as Eucharist Ministers. Among the many honors he received during his lifetime, Jerry was the recipient of the St. Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation and was honored by St. Paul II who named him a Papal Knight of St. Gregory. He was a 50 year member of Serra International, serving the local club twice as President, District Governor and two terms as Regional Director. He was a member of the International Nominating and Long Range Committees. He was elected and served several years as a Board Member of Serra International and the Foundation Boards, including a term as President of the latter. Prior to retirement he worked for Connecticut General (CIGNA) and was President for one term of the CG Club. On a local level he was a member of St. Agnes Home, serving one term as Chairperson, the Development Committee of the Sisters of St. Joseph, a member of the final Board of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Treasurer of Interfaith Homes of Bloomfield, a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of The Holy Family Retreat League having attended over thirty retreats. He died on December 11, 2017 at the age of 92.
