Sergeant Eugene Sims Dawson service number 6971006 United States Army Killed in Action POW. Sergeant Dawson was born on July 22, 1914, in McComb, Mississippi. He was the son of Charles Goodrich Dawson and Tulula Bryant Delagarza (Dawson). He had four brothers and two sisters. He entered the United States Army Air Corps on September 29, 1939. He served in the Philippines and fought for the defense of Bataan. He served in the 48th Materiel Squadron, 27th bombardment group. He was taken prisoner on Bataan and took part in the Bataan Death March. He was imprisoned in the O’Donnell POW Camp where he died on July 2, 1942 at the age of 27. Camp O’Donnell is located at Capas, Tarlac, Philippines, north of Clark Field. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, American Defense Medal, the World War Two Victory Medal and the Prisoner of War Medal.
