CPL George Victor Helander 31257309 US Army Air Corps. He was the son of Victor W. Helander and Sophia Catherine Aho Helander, his parents were Finnish immigrants. George was born May 9, 1913 in Bronx, New York. Sometime between 1925 and 1930 his family moved from the Bronx, New York to Ashby, Massachusetts.
He entered the US Army on December 17, 1942, at the age of 29. At the time of his enlistment he was living in Ashby Massachusetts. He was 5 foot 9 inches tall weighed 160 pounds had Blue eyes and Blonde hair. He served at Mitchel Field New York from Dec 27, 1943 – Jan 21 1944 he then served at Miami Beach Fla. From Miami he went to Scott Field Ill. He then served overseas with the 80th Fighter Squadron “headhunters”. He was discharged on January 19, 1946 after 3 years of service. He married Aili E. Helander in 1949. He died September 28, 1997 Rockingham county, New Hampshire.
